India has over 900 million internet users.
Your customers are scrolling WhatsApp, watching Reels, and comparing prices on Google - all before 9 AM.
Yet most Indian SMEs still treat digital marketing as an afterthought.
This checklist fixes that. Save this post. Work through it section by section.
1. Google My Business & Local SEO
46% of all Google searches have local intent. This is free traffic. Don't ignore it.
- Claim and verify your GMB listing (address, phone, hours, category) - Upload at least 15 photos - storefront, products, team, logo - Collect 25+ Google reviews actively - Respond to every review within 48 hours - Post GMB updates weekly - offers, events, new arrivals - Add products/services with descriptions and prices - Keep your Name, Address, Phone consistent on Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART
*India tip: Add your listing in your regional language too. Most competitors skip this entirely.*
2. Website & Mobile Experience
India is mobile-first, often on mid-range Android over 4G. A slow or broken site = lost customer.
- Pass Google's Core Web Vitals (test on PageSpeed Insights) - Mobile-responsive design - test on a low-end Android device - SSL certificate installed (HTTPS) - One clear CTA on every page - "Call Now", "WhatsApp Us", "Get a Quote." - UPI / Razorpay / PhonePe payment options enabled - Multilingual support for your target audience - WhatsApp button or chatbot embedded on the site
3. WhatsApp Business & Messaging
530 million Indian users. It's a sales channel, support desk, and broadcast medium - all in one.
- WhatsApp Business profile fully set up with catalogue - Quick Replies saved for your top 10 FAQs - Broadcast list segmented by customer type - Product catalogue updated monthly - Automated welcome + away messages active - WhatsApp link added to email signature, bio, packaging (wa.me/yourNumber)
*India tip: Voice messages in regional languages convert better than text for Tier 2/3 audiences.*
4. Social Media Presence
Pick two platforms. Do them well. Instagram + YouTube is the strongest combo for most Indian SMEs in 2026.
- Instagram Business profile - keyword-rich bio, link-in-bio tool, branded highlight covers - 3–5 Reels per week (Reels get 3x more organic reach than static posts) - YouTube channel with at least 12 videos - demos, tutorials, customer stories - YouTube Shorts published weekly (repurpose your Reels) - Facebook page active for 35+ audiences and regional community groups - LinkedIn Company Page set up (essential for B2B SMEs) - Content calendar planned 2 weeks in advance - include festivals
5. Content & SEO Strategy
This is your long-term moat. A well-optimised page brings in leads for years at zero ad spend.
- Keyword research done for your top 20 business terms - Blog publishing at least 2 posts per month - Every product/service has its own dedicated SEO page - Schema markup added (LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Product) - XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console - Internal linking across all pages and blog posts
*AI content tip: AI drafts are fine - but add original data, local context, and a human review. Google penalises generic AI articles with no unique value.*
6. Paid Advertising
India's cost-per-click is among the lowest globally. Even ₹500/day can move the needle.
- Google Search Ads running for your top 5 keywords - Meta Ads (Instagram + Facebook) active - Retargeting pixel installed on your website - WhatsApp Click-to-Chat ads running on Meta - Ad creatives refreshed every 3 weeks - Conversion tracking configured on all platforms
7. Email & CRM
Email delivers ₹3,600 return for every ₹100 spent. Indian SMEs massively underuse this channel.
- CRM tool in use - Zoho CRM, HubSpot Free, or Salesforce - Email list of at least 500 customers built - Monthly newsletter going out consistently - Automated welcome email sequence set up (3 emails) - Post-purchase follow-up email automated
8. Analytics & Measurement
You cannot grow what you don't measure. This takes 2 hours to set up and saves lakhs in wasted spend.
- Google Analytics 4 (GA4) installed and verified - Google Search Console connected - Key conversions tracked - calls, forms, purchases - Monthly marketing review scheduled (30 minutes) - UTM parameters used on all paid campaigns
This checklist has 51 items. Don't let that overwhelm you.
Pick the 5 items you haven't done yet that are most relevant to your current business stage. Complete those this week. A 60% complete, well-executed digital presence beats a 100% checklist that never gets implemented.
India's SME digital opportunity is still early. The businesses building solid foundations now will be impossible to dislodge in 3 years.
